How to buy organic and save money

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

As many of you Kim Kare readers know, I can't resist a deal and with food prices going up and my wallet shrinking by the minute--I eat a lot, what can I say--I decided to make a trip to my local Grocery Outlet.

Yes, you read that correctly.

After my trip to the Grocery Outlet I realized I can still have my pie in the sky.  Yummy! The deals were amazing and the expiration dates were actually better than my local grocery stores.

If you need to blink a few times to make sure you read that correctly, please feel free to do so.

Wait, I haven't gotten to the best part yet...I was able to buy almost all organic and saved over $83.00.

The grand total I spent on all of this food was $100.56.

Please feel free to enlarge the picture to get a good idea of just how amazing that price was for the amount of organic food I was able to purchase.

If you still want to buy organic, which is environmentally and human friendly, head on over to your local Grocery Outlet and give your wallet some time to fatten up.

P.S. Did I mention the fact that they sell wines from all over the world at a fraction of the cost? Just making sure you knew:)

How Cheap Bleepers save money on the late night munchies

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

With the pressure to stay healthy getting more intense by the minute, I found that resisting the late night munchies has become almost impossible.

So, earlier this year, I decided I was no longer going to succumb to the peer pressure of my stomach.  I guess you could say my stomach is the equivalent of a mean girl.  Don't fret, I kicked my mean girls...ahem. Sorry about that.  We've never gotten along. Ha! Ha!

Anyway, back to my mean girl butt kicking secret weapon...almond milk.

Almond milk? I know you can buy the stuff in the store but let's just say juicing the almonds is cheaper, tastier, much thicker and much better at kicking the mean girls butt than anything store bought

All you need is:
-1 cup of dried almonds. Make sure you soak the almonds 12 hours prior to juicing.
-juicer
-3-6 cups of water (6 if you run the almond pulp through the juicer. I do this to save money and get more bang for my buck)
-2 tablespoons of vanilla
-1/4 stick of cinnamon
-4 packets of Stevia

I'll keep this simple.

Notice how much the almonds expand. I peel my almonds while they are soaking...I don't like the skins texture in the milk.  Do whatever works for you though.

Step #1: pour the almonds and water simultaneously.  Make sure you go slow the first round.

Step #2: remove the first batch of milk.

Step #3: pour the almond pulp and water in the juicer to squeeze out another batch of almond milk.

Step #4:
add 4 packets of Stevia to the very thick almond milk.

***Note: Thank heavens for this amazing all natural sugar substitute. J'adore Stevia.***

Step #5: add 2 tablespoons of vanilla

Step #6: grate fresh cinnamon (1 teaspoon if you can't grate it)

Step #7: pour & enjoy.

I usually put the rest in the fridge and milk it for at least 8 days.  Get it?  Milk it. Now that's a knee slapper. I just patted myself on the back for that one.  Hey, I never said I was cool...well, there was that one time.

Until next time...
